As promised, here are some of the recipes from Memorial Day, all of which we thoroughly enjoyed. None of them requires much in the way of ingredient-purchasing or time committment, which is great when you’re putting things together on a lazy weekend. There’s a few strategies I employ for weekends like this past one, where I want to relax and not spend my entire day in the kitchen; I know some of us really enjoy hunkering down into a flurry of cooking and baking, but during the warmer months, I find myself wanting to do other things as well. farmers’ market monday: loaded chicken tortilla soup.

I am calling this Farmers’ Market Monday, but one could argue this may be anti-Farmers’ Market Monday. Not one thing came from the farmers’ market, and I’m not ashamed. I have made more apple and pumpkin and squashy things for you and for myself these past few weeks that I needed a bit of a palate cleanser. I’ve noticed many of my blogger friends have done the same, so I say let’s take a little holiday for a minute. A tropical vacation, if you will. farmers’ market mondays: middle eastern salad.

This has been one of my favorite salads for a while now, but I especially love it in the summer, when my herbs are overflowing. I’ve grown my own fresh herbs for the past few years now, and sometimes I end up with more than I bargained for: a happy situation to be in, but one which requires some thinking in order not to waste what I’ve grown. Sometimes I make a quick pesto, and some herbs (like sage and rosemary) freeze really well; some things, however, need to just be eaten right away. Continue reading →

I was on vacation in Florida when I saw this recipe. It is family tradition when on our annual summer vacation to purchase 20-odd magazines for no reason to absentmindedly thumb through, either while eating or lazing it up poolside.
