making things with our hands: a vacation update.

spring break-ation 2013.

“Art and music are the first things to go in schools. The role of art is disappearing. When we were kids, we learned about bakers and candlestick makers. We learned about cobblers and all these old-school, awesome things that people did their entire lives. They specialized in making one thing. … In archeology, the things that matter most are handmade: ceramics, glass, sacrophagi, paintings. The most valued objects of lost cultures are the things that were made by hand. We need to start making things with our hands again.” – Ira Coyne, sign painter.

spring break-ation 2013.

It’s my last night in Florida, and I’m headed home (in theory) to what may be the largest snowstorm to cross the midwest in 3 decades. It’s only appropriate, I suppose, that  the  tradeoff for balmy temperatures, palm trees, and abundant farmers’ markets these past two weeks is to try and plan Passover food and a springy Easter menu amidst a foot of snow.

I’ll do my official vacation recap post after setting foot on cold, cold ground and revving up my real live laptop to work on. Needless to say, I’ve missed all of you. I’ve missed my kitchen. I’ve missed writing. I’ve tried to make food while here, and it’s been good, but not up to the standard I have for sharing with all of you. One thing was a surprise standout – a dark chocolate cupcake with coffee frosting – and I’ll be writing that up soon enough.

I’m going to get home (if the universe is kind), unpack, and settle back in. I have so much to share with you, and I’m super excited about it, but I need to feel my own four walls first. I miss baking. I miss the thinking, preparing, and the throwing together of food. I miss the feel of it. I need to start making things with my hands again.

See you very soon.

Omg wee one is so cute! And we miss you and your menu planning too! <3

I'm sorry it's snowy back home, sunny and in the 80s here… (You can rub it in when its 115 here in a fee months)

Those cupcakes are right up my alley and I can't wait for the recipe!

I miss my OWN menu-planning! I think i finally have easter down, albeit only food and not decorations (a shame, since there are so many cute easter things to do out there). I suppose all the spring food items will be decoration enough.

I was just going to say i’ll get back to you when it’s deadly hot when, like next month? (“BUT IT’S A DRY HEAT!!”) 🙂

They were sooooo good; the coffee frosting is my new favorite thing. Now i just need to find where i put the recipe notes (because i know they’re here somewhere, and i know i didn’t leave them in florida, argh…)

I’ve missed you. We’ve had snow here too. Really annoying, makes-it-hard-to-get-anywhere snow. But I think we’re in the clear now. I can smell spring…

Do you know that almost every citizen of Nova Scotia, Ontario, and parts of Quebec were in my sleepy beach town? I lost count of all the license plates we saw when we ventured out anywhere, and i caught a group of rogue Canadians singing “La Vie en Rose” at the top of their lungs in the middle of the day. I think they were all down there because of the massive winter we all keep having.

It was awesome/terrifying. I was wondering, though, if next year maybe you and 2.0 would like to hitch a ride with the rest of your country? we could vacation together. It would be equally terrifying/awesome, but in the way that you and i would have fun and 2.0 and Mr. Table would be terrified.

I think spring is coming. slowly, but it’s somehow on its way. I hope.

Seriously, how did two people comment before me when I JUST got to my desk this morning!!!

Aw, I love that pic of the wee one laying in the sand! So cute 🙂 I’m so looking forward to your getting back to regular posting. I missed you (and your recipes)!

I totally snuck this in under your normal radar; i posted it at night, WHEN YOU WERE NOT AT YOUR DESK. 🙂

she was making “snow angels” which i enjoyed quite a bit (except, i should say, for the post-snow angel toddler sand cleanout; sand everywhere!) I am back, she is at her grandparents’ house today, and i am working my beach bum off trying to catch up. I fear the google reader at this point. I missed you too (and YOUR recipes: i sneak-attack made one and didn’t tell you about it, but i need to because it was delicious!)

oooh! which recipe??? That makes me so happy 🙂

i did your lentil bolognese! I made it right before i left for Florida because i saw that it made a pretty large batch and thought that I could freeze it for Mr. Table to eat while i was gone. We had some the night i made it and i froze most of the leftovers (we ate it again the next night, too). It was so good! I’ll admit i added a few extra things to it; i think a little leftover mascarpone and some fresh parmesan, but it was purely for fridge clean-out; it was wonderful as/is, and we’ll totally make it again.

The snow isn’t worth it, just stay in Florida!!! (unless you’ll bring Florida with you to the Midwest. I’m in desperate need of real spring.) Though I’m excited to see your blog posts again! Safe travels!

alas, i can’t! or i couldn’t – i had already lengthened my trip once and stayed a few extra days for a graphic design project meeting down there (it’s like i can’t NOT work), so it was at the point where Mr. Table was wondering if we were ever getting back here. 🙂 I hope Florida weather misses me and follows me here; i know it’s warmer today, and maybe it stays that way? Perhaps? I hope so.

See you on the flip side, Shannon. Yes, art is important, and it’s too bad it’s the first thing to be taken away–poor kids. Oh, and I’ve missed you like crazy.

You know, the comment struck me mostly because i watch the Wee One doing all sorts of art and music things (i was always very much into that, and still am today) and just loving it so much. I never considered art or music in schools to be any less important or less “required” than i did science or history; it just never occurred to me that they would be considered less essential to kids. it’s something i probably think more about as it gets closer to preschool time for her; we make so many things with our hands around here that i’d hate to think there wasn’t that encouragement for her when i’m not around. things are really different in some ways than when all of us were running around elementary school, i guess.
i’ve missed you too, Jennie. I’m truly happy to be back with all of you and back in my kitchen.
