Well hello there! Happy Independence Day to you; I hope you had a lovely day in whatever weather you prefer for your summer holidays, and I hope you had a chance to sit around and eat with people you love. I did. We made these funny little cupcakes out of white box cake mix (because I’m on vacation, and there’s nothing wrong with a good white box cake). We dolled them up with the Momofuku Milk Bar birthday cake frosting, sprinkled them with a little patriotism, and fashioned tiny fireworks out of licorice whips. Then, we gave them toothpick flags.
We prepared for guests.
We gathered the condiments and spreaders.
And then the guests came. So we grilled hamburgers and hot dogs.
We put them on assorted buns.
We stuffed our faces with my mom’s potato salad that, curiously, none of us have the recipe for. It’s probably better that way. It’s dangerous stuff.
Also, I baked up this tart by making a tart crust and using a Springform pan as a makeshift tart pan. I don’t bring my tart pans on vacation with me, oddly enough. I filled it with fresh pastry cream and fresh berries and it was totally light and refreshing. I’ll totally share this recipe with you very soon.
Mostly, we just ate, and chatted around tables, and ran in circles with the Wee One, and made dessert picnics on the floor with blankets, and laughed.
And so another summer holiday goes by. I am sleepy and stuffed, but in the best ways possible.
